Dollar Store DIY Sunglasses Box

I was in Dollar Tree the other day and I was shocked at their big selection of picture frames. I immediately started to think of all the endless possibilities of cool things I could do with these inexpensive picture frames. I’ve seen so many projects on Pinterest lately that I decided to grab a few myself so I could make a box to store my sunglasses.

Guys, this project is so simple. I feel like I will be making more dollar store picture frame boxes in the future just because I had so much fun with this.  I spent around $10 to make this box and I love how it turned out.

A golden framed glass box holding four pairs of sunglasses and two watches, sitting on top of a dresser next to flowers and a candle.

For this project you will need:

  • 6 picture frames (I got two 8×10 frames, two 7×11 frames, and two 5×7 frames)
  • Spray paint of choice
  • 2 Hinges
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Pliers (optional)
  • Tape (optional)

Six picture frames, spray paint, tape, and a hot glue gun laid out on the floor.

I wanted my sunglasses box to be gold instead of black, so I took all the glass out of the picture frames and set them aside for later. I brought the frames outside and sprayed them down with gold spray paint until they were evenly coated. Once they were dry, I flipped them over and sprayed down the back.

After my frames were completely dry, I decided I wanted to remove the prongs that hold the glass so that they wouldn’t be visible when I assembled the box. These prongs come out very easily. I also recommend doing this before you spray paint!

After the prongs were removed, I hot glued the glass to the frame. Make sure to do this quickly, since the glue dries very fast. Also be sure not to use too much glue or it will leak onto the glass and be visible.

Next it was time to start building the box. I used the two 8×10 frames as the bottom and the top of the box. I glued the two 5×7 frames to the bottom 8×10 frame first.

Now it’s time to add the hinges and the lid to the box. I got these hinges from Lowe’s for around $2 and they come in a pack of four.

I just used hot glue to secure the hinges to the frames. (I didn’t want to break my dollar store frames by using the screws that came with the hinges)

I can’t stress how easy and inexpensive this project was. Be sure to let me know if you try it out. You can tag me on Instagram or Twitter.

I hope you are having an awesome week. My fall semester started on Monday, so I have been very busy this week in between class and work. What are some ways you stay organized when you are busy? Let me know in the comments!
